Hysterectomy Q & A
What is a hysterectomy?
A hysterectomy is a medical operation for removing a woman’s uterus. Dr. Soini recommends removing the fallopian tubes and ovaries during a hysterectomy for some women as well.
Since the uterus is required for reproduction, a hysterectomy eliminates menstruation and the ability to conceive.
When does a woman need a hysterectomy?
Some women choose to have a hysterectomy if they have one of the following medical problems:
- Heavy bleeding
- Pelvic pain
- Endometriosis: the uterine lining grows outside the uterus
- Uterine fibroids: growths in the uterine walls
- Uterine prolapse: the uterus slips down inside the vagina
- Precancerous markers or cancer in the uterus, cervix, endometrium, or ovaries
What happens during a hysterectomy?
Dr. Soini performs both laparoscopic and abdominal hysterectomies. He uses minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques to remove the uterus whenever possible.
Before surgery, he puts you to sleep under general anesthesia, so you don’t feel any pain. Then, he makes an incision, which differs depending on what type of hysterectomy he performs.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy
If he performs a laparoscopic hysterectomy, Dr. Soini creates a small incision in your belly button and inserts a tiny camera inside. He makes several more small incisions in the lower abdomen, through which he inserts special medical instruments.
Using images from the camera for guidance, he removes your uterus in pieces with the tiny specialized tools. If needed, he also removes the ovaries and cervix in the same way.
Abdominal hysterectomy
During an abdominal hysterectomy, Dr. Soini makes a longer incision across your abdomen. Then, he removes your reproductive organs directly through the incision.
After surgery, Dr. Soini stitches your incisions shut and takes you to a recovery room. Most women can go home the same day as a laparoscopic hysterectomy. Abdominal hysterectomies usually entail a 2-3 day hospital stay.
What are the benefits of a laparoscopic hysterectomy?
If you need a hysterectomy, Dr. Soini offers the most advanced surgical techniques available, including laparoscopy. If you’re a good candidate, you can benefit from the following advantages:
- Smaller incisions and less scarring
- Less risk of complications, such as blood loss and infection
- Shorter recovery and less pain
- Shorter hospital stay
